Custom steering wheels for the Mercedes-Benz SL R230

The R230 SL was built from 2001 to 2011 with its folding hard top, from the SL 350 to the V12 SL 600 and SL 65 AMG. With the roof down the steering wheel sits in the sun, so on many R230s the leather has faded or cracked long before the rest of the cabin.

Which wheel does your SL have?

The R230 uses the same wheel as the facelift W211 E-Class, the pre-facelift CLS (C219) and the CLK (W209), recognisable by the elegant line that runs across it, and you can build and preview it in the builder above. If your wheel looks different from the one in the builder, send us a photo and we will tell you what we can do.

Wood and finishes

The builder offers burl walnut, bird's-eye maple and designo umber maple, plus carbon fibre, forged carbon and piano black. Match the wood already in your car, and if yours is not listed, choose the closest one and name it in the notes.

Paddle shifters

You can add paddle shifters in the builder. They are the standard plastic paddles, not the chrome ones fitted only to AMG models, but if you have chrome AMG paddles you can fit them to the finished wheel afterwards.

Build ideas for the SL

Interior matched: many SLs have lighter or coloured interiors, and a wheel in the same leather as your seats looks factory-made.

AMG look: the thicker sport grip with a flat bottom, Alcantara or perforated sides and paddle shifters, in the spirit of the SL 55 and SL 65 AMG.

Carbon: carbon or forged carbon top and bottom with smooth nappa, for a more modern cabin.

Before you order

Every wheel starts from a used original Mercedes-Benz core, so it bolts straight onto your SL. We rebuild everything you see and touch. Parts inside the wheel can show some corrosion from age, which is out of our hands, but when we source a wheel for you we pick the best core we can find.

The airbag on this wheel comes off easily. Remove it before sending your wheel and keep it at home; we never ship airbag units. When the wheel comes back, have the airbag refitted by a qualified mechanic.

SL steering wheel questions

Why does the builder show a W211 wheel?
Because the R230 shares its wheel with the facelift W211 E-Class, the pre-facelift CLS and the CLK W209. It is the same part, so it fits your SL.

Will my chrome AMG paddles fit?
Yes. We fit the standard plastic paddles, and you can swap your chrome ones onto the finished wheel.

How long does it take?
Most builds take one to two weeks in our workshop. We email you photos of the finished wheel to approve, then it ships to you anywhere in the world.
