Custom steering wheels for the Mercedes-Benz SL R129
The R129 SL was built from 1989 to 2001, from the SL 280 to the V12 SL 600, and it is still one of the most loved SLs. It is also where the SL-style wheels in our other builders come from. As an open car, its wheel spends years in the sun, so faded and cracked leather is common.
Which wheel does your SL have?
The builder above sorts the wheels by production year.
Cars built up to early 1991 have the first-generation four-spoke wheel, in a standard and a smaller-diameter version, plus the rare Sport Line wheel.
Cars built from late 1991 have the updated second-generation wheel, again with a Sport Line version, and can also take the two SL-style wheels.
The very earliest R129s have a larger 420 mm wheel. If yours is one of them, send us a photo before you order and we will tell you what we can do.
Wood and colour in the SL
The builder lists the woods offered for each wheel, including burl walnut, zebrano, bird's-eye maple and, on the updated SL-style wheel, chestnut burl. The best match is the wood already in your car, so compare it with your dashboard and console before you choose.
Many SLs have coloured interiors, and we can match the leather to yours. The SL-style wheels can also be built two-tone, in two colours of your choice.
Popular SL builds
Classic open-top: smooth nappa in your interior colour with a burl walnut top and bottom.
Two-tone: an SL-style wheel in two colours, picking up the seats and the carpets.
Sport shape: the thicker sport grip with perforated leather sides, for SL 500 and SL 600 owners who enjoy driving them.
Before you order
Every wheel starts from a used original Mercedes-Benz core, so it bolts straight onto your SL. We rebuild everything you see and touch. Parts inside the wheel can show some corrosion from age, which is out of our hands, but when we source a wheel for you we pick the best core we can find.
Sport Line wheels are hard to find, so for those we build on the wheel you send us.
If your car has a driver airbag, remove the unit before sending your wheel and keep it at home; we never ship airbag units. When the wheel comes back, have the airbag refitted by a qualified mechanic.
SL steering wheel questions
My SL has the big early wheel. Can you build it?
Send us a photo before you order and we will tell you what we can do.
How long does it take?
Most builds take one to two weeks in our workshop. We email you photos of the finished wheel to approve, then it ships to you anywhere in the world.
