Custom steering wheels for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140
The W140 S-Class was built from 1991 to 1998, from the S280 to the V12 S600, alongside the C140 coupe. Mercedes built it with very few compromises, and after decades of use the steering wheel is often the one part of the cabin that no longer feels that way. Every W140 and C140 can take a wheel from the builder above.
Which wheel does your W140 have?
The W140 shares its four-spoke airbag wheel with the W202 C-Class and the last 190s, so the builder offers the same choice:
- Standard wheel: the original wheel, rebuilt to your specification.
- Sport Line wheel: the rarer factory option with a sportier rim.
- SL-style wheels: two wheels derived from the R129 SL that also fit the W140, a good way to give a big S-Class a sportier cockpit.
Not sure which you have? Compare your wheel with the pictures in the builder, or send us a photo.
Wood and colour in the W140
Most W140s have burl walnut, and some, mostly earlier cars, have zebrano. Some W140s also have chestnut. If yours does and the wheel you choose does not list it, select burl in the builder and tell us in the notes that you want chestnut, ideally with a photo of your trim so we can match it. As always, the trim level mattered as much as the year, so go by the wood already in your car.
Most W140 wheels are black. Some cars had coloured interiors with a wheel to match, in shades such as beige, dark green, dark red or brown, and we can match the leather to yours.
Popular W140 builds
Burl top and bottom: burl walnut or chestnut sections with smooth nappa, which keeps the calm, understated feel of the S-Class.
Sport shape: the thicker sport grip with perforated leather sides, for S500 and S600 owners who enjoy driving them.
All Alcantara: a full Alcantara wheel suits the W140 surprisingly well and feels great on a long drive.
Before you order
Every wheel starts from a used original Mercedes-Benz core, so it bolts straight onto your W140. We rebuild everything you see and touch. Parts inside the wheel can show some corrosion from age, which is out of our hands, but when we source a wheel for you we pick the best core we can find.
Sport Line wheels are hard to find, so for those we build on the wheel you send us.
If your car has a driver airbag, remove the unit before sending your wheel and keep it at home; we never ship airbag units. When the wheel comes back, have the airbag refitted by a qualified mechanic.
W140 steering wheel questions
Does the C140 coupe use the same wheel?
Yes. The C140 coupe takes the same wheels as the saloon, so the builder covers both.
Can you match chestnut wood?
Yes. Choose burl in the builder, write "chestnut" in the notes and, if you can, send us a photo of your trim.
How long does it take?
Most builds take one to two weeks in our workshop. We email you photos of the finished wheel to approve, then it ships to you anywhere in the world.
