Custom steering wheels for the Mercedes-Benz W124

The W124 E-Class was built from 1984 to 1997 as a saloon, the S124 estate, the C124 coupe and the A124 cabriolet, and all of them use the same family of steering wheels. The wheel is the part of the interior you touch every time you drive, so on a car this well built, a tired, shiny rim is the first thing that lets it down. We rebuild original W124 wheels to your specification, or source one for you.

Which wheel does your W124 have?

Mercedes fitted two generations of wheel to the W124, and the builder above sorts them by production year.

Cars built up to early 1993 have the first-generation four-spoke wheel. It came in a standard full-size version, a smaller-diameter version, and the Sport Line version with a sport ergonomic rim.

Cars built from late 1993 have the updated second-generation four-spoke wheel, again with a Sport Line version. For these cars we also build an SL-style wheel derived from the R129 SL, a popular way to give a late W124 a sportier cockpit.

Not sure which you have? Compare your wheel with the pictures in the builder, or send us a photo and we will tell you.

Wood that matches your interior

Most W124s have one of two woods. Most cars built before the 1989 facelift have zebrano, with its striped grain, and most later cars have burl walnut. It is not a clean cut by year, because the wood also depended on the trim level, so the best guide is the wood already in your car: match the wheel to your dashboard and console and it looks factory-fitted. Bird's-eye maple is also available if you want a lighter look. You will find matching pieces among our W124 wood trim.

Popular W124 builds

Everyday driver: smooth nappa in the original black, with burl walnut or zebrano to match your trim. Hard-wearing and period-correct.

Sportier feel: perforated leather with a flat bottom, as on later AMG wheels. A favourite with E320, E420 and E500 owners who drive their cars properly.

Colour matched: leather in your interior colour, which suits coupes and cabriolets with lighter interiors.

Before you order

Every wheel starts from a used original Mercedes-Benz core, so it bolts straight onto your W124. We rebuild everything you see and touch. Parts inside the wheel can show some corrosion from age, which is out of our hands, but when we source a wheel for you we pick the best core we can find.

Sport Line wheels are hard to find, so for those we build on the wheel you send us.

If your car has a driver airbag, remove the unit before sending your wheel and keep it at home; we never ship airbag units. When the wheel comes back, have the airbag refitted by a qualified mechanic.

W124 steering wheel questions

Do these wheels fit the estate, coupe and cabriolet?
Yes. The S124 estate, C124 coupe and A124 cabriolet use the same wheels as the saloon of the same year, so choose your production year in the builder.

My rim is cracked and shiny. Is it worth rebuilding?
Yes. A worn original is the ideal starting point. We strip it back, reshape it if you want a flat bottom or sport grip, and cover it in new leather, wood or carbon, so you keep the core that came with your car.

How long does it take?
Most builds take one to two weeks in our workshop. We email you photos of the finished wheel to approve, then it ships to you anywhere in the world.
