Custom steering wheels for the BMW 1 Series
The F20 and F21 1 Series ran from 2011 to 2019, from the 116i to the M135i and M140i. Most cars left the factory with the thick three-spoke M Sport wheel, and that wheel is the starting point for every build on this page.
This page covers the F20 five door and F21 three door hatchback, built 2011 to 2019.
Which wheel does the builder show?
On the 1 Series the M Sport wheel came with the M Sport package and on the M135i and M140i, while the M wheel is the same rim with M stitching and trim. Both bolt onto every F20 and F21. The builder shows both, and every option can be previewed on either.
Hatchbacks live in town, so the leather at 9 and 3 o'clock is usually the first thing to go shiny. We replace it completely rather than recolouring it.
What you can change on your 1 Series wheel
- Shape: the OEM shape, a sport grip, a clean or an aggressive flat bottom, or a clean or an aggressive square shape.
- Top and bottom: leather, carbon fibre, forged carbon, piano black or wood: Burled Walnut, Ash Grain Wood, Dark Burl Walnut Wood.
- Sides: smooth nappa, perforated leather or Alcantara.
- Trim: the centre trim in Alcantara, carbon, forged carbon or piano black.
- Airbag cover: wrapped in leather or Alcantara.
- 12 o'clock stripe: M tricolour, yellow, white, red, orange or black.
- Functions: the wheel's electronics and paddle shifters, heating and lane assist vibration.
Build ideas for the 1 Series
Hot hatch: a flat bottom with carbon fibre top and bottom, Alcantara sides and the M tricolour stripe at 12 o'clock. It suits an M140i perfectly.
Daily comfort: the OEM shape in perforated leather with a leather airbag cover, which feels new without changing the character of the car.
Full Alcantara: a sport grip wrapped completely in Alcantara with an Alcantara trim, for the most grip on track days.
Before you order
We build your wheel on a genuine BMW core, refurbished in our workshop, or on a new aftermarket core, whichever you choose. You can also send us your own wheel. The buttons on BMW wheels vary with each car's options, so after you order we confirm your car's layout with you before we start.
Remove the airbag unit before sending your wheel and keep it at home; we never ship airbag units. When the wheel comes back, have the airbag refitted by a qualified mechanic.
1 Series steering wheel questions
Will the wheel fit my 116i as well as my M140i?
Yes. Every F20 and F21 uses the same wheel fitment, and M and non-M wheels swap both ways.
Can you add paddle shifters to my manual car?
The wheel can come with paddles, but they only work on cars with the automatic gearbox.
How long does it take?
Most builds take one to two weeks in our workshop. We email you photos of the finished wheel to approve, then it ships to you anywhere in the world.
