Custom steering wheels for the BMW 1 Series E81, E82, E87 and E88

The first 1 Series, from the E87 hatchback to the E82 coupe and E88 convertible, was built from 2004 to 2013. It was BMW's small rear-wheel-drive car, and its three-spoke wheel sits right in front of you on every drive.

This page covers the E87 five door and E81 three door hatchback, the E82 coupe, the E88 convertible and the 1M Coupe, built 2004 to 2013.

Which wheel does the builder show?

The three-spoke wheels of the E90 era. The M Sport, Sport and M Performance wheels share one thick rim with different centres, and the Base Wheel is the standard wheel with its own rim. Every shape and finish can be previewed on each of them. For the 1M Coupe the builder shows the M Performance wheel.

On these cars the rim usually goes shiny at the top first, and the perforated sides wear smooth where the hands rest.

What you can change on your 1 Series wheel

  • Wheel: M Sport, Sport, M Performance or the Base Wheel.
  • Shape: the OEM shape, a flat bottom or a square shape, and a round sport grip on the Base Wheel.
  • Top and bottom: leather, carbon fibre, forged carbon, piano black or wood: Burl Wood, Poplar Light, Poplar Brown.
  • Sides: perforated leather, smooth nappa or Alcantara.
  • Trim: the centre trim in Alcantara, carbon, forged carbon or piano black.
  • Airbag cover: wrapped in leather or Alcantara.
  • 12 o'clock stripe: M tricolour, yellow, white, red, orange or black.
  • Functions: on the M Sport, Sport and M Performance wheels, their electronics, paddle shifters and heating. The Base Wheel is a plain wheel without these options.

Build ideas for the 1 Series

135i look: the M Sport wheel with a sporty flat bottom, carbon fibre top and bottom, Alcantara sides and the M tricolour stripe at 12 o'clock.

Factory fresh: the OEM shape with its perforated sides and a leather airbag cover, the original wheel as it was when new.

Coupe: the M Performance centre with the square shape and Alcantara top, bottom and sides.

Before you order

We can source the M Sport, Sport or Base Wheel for you, or build on the wheel you send us. The M Performance wheel is built on your own wheel only. The buttons on BMW wheels vary with each car's options, so after you order we confirm your car's layout with you before we start.

Remove the airbag unit before sending your wheel and keep it at home; we never ship airbag units. When the wheel comes back, have the airbag refitted by a qualified mechanic.

1 Series steering wheel questions

Does it fit the hatchback, coupe and convertible?
Yes. The E81, E82, E87 and E88 all use this wheel.

Does it fit the 1M Coupe?
Yes. Choose the 1M Coupe in the builder: it shows the M Performance wheel, which we build on your own wheel.

Can I have the M Performance centre on a wheel you source?
No. We source the M Sport, Sport and Base wheels; for the M Performance one, send us your own wheel.

How long does it take?
Most builds take one to two weeks in our workshop. We email you photos of the finished wheel to approve, then it ships to you anywhere in the world.
