Mercedes W202 C-Class Interior: The Parts That Change It Most

The W202 was the first C-Class, built from 1993 to 2000, and a lot of them are still daily drivers. Mechanically they last. Inside, they show their age in a handful of predictable places: cloudy wood, cracked dashboard speaker grilles, sagging sun visors and climate controls that no longer do what the buttons say.

The good news is that almost all of it unclips and clips back in. The catch is that the W202 changed a lot during its life, and parts from one half of production often will not fit the other. Here is how to get it right first time, with photos of the actual parts.

Facelift or pre-facelift: settle this first

Mercedes gave the W202 a facelift in 1997, and the interior changed along with the outside. Cars built from late 1997 to 2000 have a revised centre console, including the switch panel above the radio with the ASR, rear headrest, hazard and central locking buttons grouped together.

The quickest check is the part number on the back of the piece you are replacing. Where that is not possible, compare the shape and the switch cutouts against photos, not just the chassis code.

Wood or carbon: what your car had

Not every W202 had wood. Elegance cars got burl walnut, the deep swirled wood Mercedes calls Wurzelnuss, while Sport cars used a carbon finish. Our wood pieces came out of a 1998 C240, a facelift car, so they suit late interiors.

If you are replacing more than one piece, try to buy them together. Burl walnut varies from piece to piece, and the lacquer yellows at a different rate depending on how much sun each part has seen. Pieces from the same car sit together naturally. Pieces from three different cars can look like three different woods.

Climate controls

The W202 used more than one climate control design over its life, including an early push-button panel and a version with rotary dials for fan speed and temperature. They are not a guaranteed swap for each other, because the connections differ between versions, so match the part number on the back of your unit.

Before blaming the panel, rule out the cheaper faults. A blower that only works on some speeds is more often the blower regulator than the control unit. No illumination at night is often just the bulbs. The panel is the likely fault when buttons stop responding, or the controls clearly do nothing while the fan itself works.

Comfort module and cluster

The comfort module runs the convenience side of the windows, sunroof and central locking. When it fails, the basic functions tend to work while the automatic ones do not. We cover the symptoms in more detail in our guide to relays and control modules.

The small parts that change the most

These are the pieces people stop noticing on their own car and a buyer notices in seconds. None of them are expensive, and each one unclips.

• Dashboard speaker covers sit in full sun on top of the dash, and they are notorious for cracking.
• Sun visors in beige with illuminated mirrors, checked for firm hinges. They also fit the W210.
• Overhead console in black, for Sport and AMG-line interiors.

And one for the outside

The Elegance door mouldings, with their chrome upper strip, are the detail that separates an Elegance from the other trim lines at a glance. They are also easy to damage in car parks, and a single dented strip spoils the side of the car.
